I learned this song back in 1978, my first year teaching Good News Clubs. I tell children it’s an “oldie but a goodie.” It’s a great tool to teach children the concepts of soul, salvation, and belonging to God’s forever family.
Here’s how we explain some church terminology on a child’s level:
Saving my soul: In this song, it’s referring to the part of us that lives forever when our life is over here on earth. Our soul is the part of us that contains our wants and desires (Psalm 72:14).
Making me whole: The Bible teaches that our sins separate us from God. (Sin is choosing our way instead of God’s way that we learn in the Bible). When we believe in Jesus and death, burial and resurrection and ask Him to save us from the punishment of sin, we are no longer separated from God but we are “made whole” and belong to His forever family (Romans 10:9-10).
Salvation: Salvation means to rescue. God sent Jesus to rescue us from the punishment of sin, which is separation from God forever.
Rich and Free: Rich means it’s the greatest gift in the world. Free means that it’s truly a gift, we don’t have to pay or work to receive salvation from God. Jesus bought this gift for us with His precious blood (1 Peter 1:9).
If you are teaching young children, just teach one concept a week. Adjust accordingly to the age and attention span of your class.
After teaching these concepts to the children and using the attached visual-aid to sing the song with the children a couple of times, give an invitation to receive God’s gift of salvation and follow-up with counseling the child for salvation.
